Moving out checklist for London renters
Moving out of a rental is easier with a plan. Use this timeline to stay on top of notice, cleaning, utilities and your deposit.
Quick answer
Give notice and book your clean and removals about four weeks ahead, redirect your post two weeks ahead, defrost the freezer the week before, and take meter readings and photos on the day.
Four weeks before
- Check your tenancy agreement for your notice period and give notice in writing
- Find your check-in inventory
- Book your removal van or help
- Book your end of tenancy clean
Two weeks before
- Start packing rooms you use least
- Arrange to sell, donate or dispose of anything you are not taking
- Set up post redirection
- Tell your council, bank and employer your new address
One week before
- Defrost the freezer
- Fix small issues such as picture hooks, if your agreement allows
- Confirm the check-out appointment
On moving day
- Take final meter readings with photos
- Make sure the property is empty before the clean
- Take dated photos of every room after the clean
- Return all keys and get a receipt
